The ministry collaborates with a variety of partners (conservation authorities, Environment and Climate Change Canada, United States government agencies, provincial ministries, municipalities, Indigenous, First Nations, Métis) on protecting our shared drinking water sources. The ministry also continues to support the Source Water Protection - Resource Catalogue for Education and Outreach Policies (https://conservationontario.ca/resources/). The ministry has implemented its commitment to review and consider the policy. The ministry undertakes a wide range of activities designed to raise the profile of the importance of Lake Ontario (and all Great Lakes) as a source of drinking water through the Lake Ontario Partnership Working Group under the Canada-U.S. Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Canada-Ontario Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality and Ecosystem Health. The ministry will continue to report on the actions resulting from the review of the policy.
Policy Text:
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is requested to establish an outreach program to discuss the findings and policies arising from the source water protection program with the National Energy Board, Ontario Energy Board, Environment Canada, Health Canada, New York State and US government agencies in order to:
a) encourage collaboration on protecting our shared drinking water sources; and
b) raise profile of the importance of Lake Ontario as a source of drinking water for Ontario.
Timelines:
T-15: The policy shall be considered within 2 years from the date the Source Protection Plan takes effect.
Monitoring Text:
MON-4: The provincial ministry shall, by February 1 of each year, prepare and submit a report to the Source Protection Authority on the actions taken in the previous calendar year to achieve the outcomes of the source protection policy. Reporting shall include information related to the effectiveness of the policies in ensuring a threat ceases to be, or does not become significant, and any actions required to respond to a drinking water threat during the reporting period.
