The drinking water source for Toronto is Lake Ontario. Its ambient salt content is dominated by inputs in the Niagara River, and the multiple watersheds on which road salt is applied around Lake Ontario. Based on Policy LO-G-03, Toronto, in partnership with The Regional Municipalities of Peel and Durham, are starting to install in-lake instrumentation which will allow continuous monitoring of in-lake conductivity levels. Also, the City of Toronto samples the raw and treated water for sodium and chloride at all the drinking water treatment plants throughout the year. There are seasonal variations in sodium and chloride concentrations. Concentrations are at baseline levels throughout the summer and fall season. Concentrations are higher during the winter season due to road salt from snowmelt before returning to baseline concentrations during the spring season.
