The solid waste services department prepares an annual Waste Reduction and Diversion Strategy (WRDS) that is supplemental to the overarching Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP) that was approved in 2009 by Council. The WRDS provides the specific details of the various tasks that will be Implemented in the year to work towards the broader strategies as defined in the IWMP. Strategies could include targeted education programs for recyclables, expanding communication with the apartment community, upgrading the recycling bags for apartments, researching the viability of a dual stream recycling program, etc.

The Township encourages proper waste disposal for all property owners. New development applications are reviewed and possibly conditioned to ensure property waste removal. Hazardous waste collection program is available and is completed in conjunction with the UCLG.

The Township maintains a year-round household hazardous waste depot at 2491 Keeley Road and offers the service to residents free of charge. This service is promoted extensively online, in newsletters and through the Recycles App. The Township, at present, does not have a separate & targeted communications strategy toward non-toxic (green) HH products.
Policy Text:
All municipalities in the Cataraqui Source Protection Area should evaluate their waste management programs and improve them as necessary in order to reduce the impacts of improper disposal of wastes on sources of drinking water within two years of the Source Protection Plan taking effect.
The waste management programs should:
encourage landowners, tenants, and small business operators to properly dispose of waste products and
ensure that local hazardous waste collection programs are accessible and convenient, and provide information to encourage the use of non-toxic (green) household products.
If the foregoing is undertaken by the municipality, the municipality should provide the Cataraqui Source Protection Authority with a copy of the program evaluation within 60 days of its completion or after its endorsement by Council, if applicable.
