Dedicated information sessions on the importance of protecting groundwater have not been delivered by MMAH. However, the importance of protecting groundwater and detailed sourcewater protection provisions have been discussed and incorporated into all official plan programs in the area. Municipal councils and staff have been provided with detailed policy guidance by MMAH, in consultation with the MECP, including information related to the importance of protecting groundwater. MMAH previously contributed to a regional municipal conference in 2012 and 2014 called the Ontario East Municipal Conference (OEMC). MMAH spoke to the importance of protecting groundwater resources through source protection plans and local official plans. This conference was attended by both staff and council for municipalities within the Cataraqui source protection area.

Policy Text:

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, in consultation with the Ministry of the Environment and groundwater focused organizations, should coordinate the delivery of information sessions targeted to municipal councils and staff that would address the importance of protecting groundwater, and provide practical ideas for implementation through land use planning and development.

The information sessions should be offered to all municipalities within the Cataraqui Source Protection Area, and delivered within five years of the Source Protection Plan taking effect.
