Dedicated information sessions on the importance of protecting groundwater have not been delivered by MMAH. However, the importance of protecting groundwater and detailed source water protection provisions is regularly discussed/communicated with municipalities and their planning consultants (e.g., where MMAH is the approval authority) as part of MMAH’s One-Window pre-consultation/early engagement on new official plans or official plan updates. Also, prior to making a final decision on an official plan, MMAH has recently been sharing draft decisions with modifications with the municipality/consultant for review and endorsement. In these instances, MMAH provides written rationale on the importance of certain modifications related to the importance of protecting groundwater.
Policy Text:
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, in consultation with the Ministry of the Environment and groundwater focused organizations, should coordinate the delivery of information sessions targeted to municipal councils and staff that would address the importance of protecting groundwater, and provide practical ideas for implementation through land use planning and development.
The information sessions should be offered to all municipalities within the Cataraqui Source Protection Area, and delivered within five years of the Source Protection Plan taking effect.
