MECP - Wastewater/Sewage Works
Conform with
Prescribed Instruments
Existing
Implemented
Ministry staff have completed the review and screening process to identify previously issued Environmental Compliance Approvals for sewage works located in vulnerable areas where prescribed instrument policies may apply with the initial source protection plan approvals. However, the ministry continues to identify and review new existing Environmental Compliance Approvals as a result of source protection plan amendments on an annual basis. For those existing instruments that were screened by the Ministry and subject to existing threat prescribed instrument policies, the existing instruments had been reviewed to determine if the Standard Operating Policy can be applied or if amendments are needed to protect municipal drinking water sources.
Policy Text:
Where discharges from sewage treatment plants are existing significant drinking water threats to Lake Ontario municipal intakes,
a. the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks shall ensure that the environmental compliance approvals that govern the sewage works include appropriate terms and conditions to ensure that the systems do not become significant drinking water threats. As part of its program to review environmental compliance approvals that are affected by source protection plans and in consultation with the municipalities responsible for water services, the following conditions shall be considered for inclusion - adjustment of the reporting thresholds for pathogens and chemicals of concern in effluent.
Monitoring Text:
T-52-C (b): by February 1 of each year, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks shall make all monitoring and reporting requirements available at Access Environment for access to current monitoring and effluent limits.
