The ministry has reviewed and considered the policy. The Water Supply Wells – Requirements and Best Management Practices manual published by the Ministry provides best management practices and recommended techniques that help a person constructing and abandoning a well to protect and minimize adverse impacts to our environment. The ministry will continue to report on any actions resulting from the review of the policy.

The Region of Peel’s Private Well Abandonment Program fully funds the decommissioning of unused private drilled, dug, or bored wells located on residential and agricultural lands across the Region. Wells are decommissioned by a qualified and licensed well contractor in accordance with the Regulation 903 (Wells Regulation) under the Ontario Water Resources Act.
Policy Text:
To achieve the intent of the Clean Water Act, 2006, that drinking water threats identified in the vicinity of a transport pathway cease to be or do not become a significant threat, and that a pathway ceases to endanger the source water of a municipal water supply, the following policies apply:
c. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and the municipalities responsible for water services are requested to provide ongoing funding for incentive programs focused on the decommissioning of wells, and for education and outreach programs regarding the decommissioning of wells in accordance with Ontario Regulation 903.
