Additions to incorporate Source Water Protection into the City’s Winter Control Plan and Salt Management Plan have been sent to Operational Services. Operational Services Staff plan to incorporate the information into their plans as they are in the process of updating. A presentation on Source Water Protection was given to City of Brantford Operational Services upper management in December, 2023. The presentation specifically focused on drinking water threats - salt application, handing and storage and storage of snow and how to enhance best management plans for these threats. A list of City outdoor salt boxes that are placed within the Intake Protection Zone has been obtained. Salt management educational stickers were applied to all salt storage boxes in the IPZ in early 2023.
Policy Text:
To ensure the existing and future handling and storage of road salt ceases to be and/or
never becomes a significant drinking water threat, where such activities are, or would be,
significant drinking water threats, the City shall amend its salt management plan to identify
the location of the Intake Protection Zones and to enhance best management practices in
these areas.
Monitoring Text:
CB-CW-1.6: The City shall provide a report to the Source Protection Authority, by February 1st of each
year, summarizing the actions taken to implement the Source Protection Plan policies.
Where the City is required to implement education and outreach programs as the primary
means of managing the risk associated with significant drinking water threats, the report
must indicate, at minimum, the properties where these programs were implemented and
additional details on how the significant drinking water threat was managed and/or ceased
to be significant.
