The City has a Road Salt Management Plan which was developed in accordance with Environment Canada’s Code of Practice for Environmental Management of Road Salts. The City’s original Plan was created in 2005 and was last updated in 2015, with the associated Salt Spreader Calibration Document which is updated annually. The City initiated a full review of the Road Salt Management Plan in 2022/2023. The revised Road Salt Management Plan has consideration for designated vulnerable areas under Clean Water Act, where applicable. A copy of the City’s Road Salt Management Plan can be made available to the Source Protection Authority upon request.

Historical records indicate that Smart About Salt training has been completed by all Town Staff in the Roads and Surfaces operations. The Town has a Salt Management Plan Policy that is reviewed annually with the Environmental Services - Roads and Surface operations staff. Environmental Services Staff completes an annual Winter Maintenance Training day in the Fall that includes a salt application component.

Within one year of the Source Protection Plan taking effect, municipalities that have areas where road salt application and/or snow storage (snow piles) are or would be a significant drinking water threat as described in Appendix B shall begin to take the following action in these areas:
Undertake initiatives such as a municipal staff training program to encourage smart salt practices for municipally owned parking lots, sidewalks and other public facilities
Promote the Smart About Salt program to private contractors and encourage them to become Smart About Salt certified (Source Protection Authorities can assist with promotion.

By February 1 of each year, the municipality shall provide the Source Protection Authority with a summary of implementation activities for the previous calendar year related to legally binding policies where the municipality is the implementer.
