The ministry has reviewed and considered the policy and will continue to report on any actions resulting from the review of the policy. The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and the ministry have established a process to review files for abandoned fuel sites under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Compliance efforts focus on sites with elevated risk and prioritize sites within source protection vulnerable areas.
Policy Text:
To reduce the risk to municipal drinking water sources from fuel storage tanks located on abandoned properties where the storage of fuel is, or would be, a significant drinking water threat, the Province (Ministry of Environment) should consider undertaking the removal of fuel storage tanks when they become aware of them.
