In progress/some progress made
This past year we have completed a lot of public education for the Source Water Protection program. This includes the following: distributing 463 salt and snow awareness door hangers, 204 pesticide application awareness door hangers and 329 General Info Flyers on the Source Water Protection program. We targeted the most vulnerable intake protection zones (IPZ-1-v.10 and IPZ-2-v.9). Educational stickers were placed on City-owned road salt storage bins. Stickers were distributed to some commercial/ industrial properties within the Intake Protection Zone as well. We also had a social media campaign for the road salt, snow and pesticide threats during target seasons (winter for salt and snow and spring/ early summer for pesticides). This education and outreach is meant to promote awareness of the drinking water threats and offer tips on how to manage and minimize the threats. They also provide contact information in case there is interest in finding out more information. For 2025, more educational material will be developed for other threats that require education and outreach including establishment, operation or maintenance of a waste disposal site and the handling and storage of a dense non-aqueous phase liquid and organic solvents, Information on road salt, snow and pesticide application will continue to be distributed to promote awareness and understanding.
Policy Text:
To reduce the risks to drinking water from any existing and/or future significant drinking
water threat, the City of Brantford, in collaboration with Conservation Authorities and other
bodies wherever possible, may develop and implement education and outreach programs
directed at any, or all, significant drinking water threats where such programs are deemed
necessary and/or appropriate by the City. Such programs may include, but not necessarily
be limited to, increasing awareness and understanding of significant drinking water threats
and promotion of best management practices.
The Education and Outreach program may consist of targeted mailings to specific
property owners, inserts with current City mailings, inclusion of Source Water Protection
information in existing education and outreach programs and/or information available on
the City’s website.
Monitoring Text:

Where the City is required to implement education and outreach programs as the primary
means of managing the risk associated with significant drinking water threats, the report
must indicate, at minimum, the properties where these programs were implemented and
additional details on how the significant drinking water threat was managed and/or ceased
to be significant.
