The City’s Winter Control Plan and Salt Management Plan have been updated to include Source Water Protection and the Intake Protection Zones within their best management practices. The Intake Protection Zones are identified in these documents and the best management practices take Source Water Protection into consideration. Salt management educational stickers were applied to all salt storage boxes in the IPZ in early 2024. Operational Services educates their employees on Source Water Protection Intake Protection Zone locations and policy. We continue to work with Operational Services to manage this threat.
Policy Text:
To ensure the existing and future handling and storage of road salt ceases to be and/or
never becomes a significant drinking water threat, where such activities are, or would be,
significant drinking water threats, the City shall amend its salt management plan to identify
the location of the Intake Protection Zones and to enhance best management practices in
these areas.
Monitoring Text:
CB-CW-1.6: The City shall provide a report to the Source Protection Authority, by February 1st of each
year, summarizing the actions taken to implement the Source Protection Plan policies.
Where the City is required to implement education and outreach programs as the primary
means of managing the risk associated with significant drinking water threats, the report
must indicate, at minimum, the properties where these programs were implemented and
additional details on how the significant drinking water threat was managed and/or ceased
to be significant.
