In 2025 we distributed 226 road salt application and storage awareness door hangers. We targeted the most vulnerable intake protection zones (IPZ-1-v.10 and IPZ-2-v.9). Educational stickers were placed on City-owned road salt storage bins. The educational stickers were also distributed to some commercial/ industrial properties within the Intake Protection Zone as well. There is information on our City Source Water webpage advising of Best Management Practices for residents to follow when using and storing road salt. They also provide contact information in case there is interest in finding out more information. This education and outreach is meant to promote awareness of the drinking water threat and offer tips on how to manage and minimize this threat.

Policy Text:

To ensure any existing or future application of road salt where such activities are, or would be, significant drinking water threats, the City shall develop and implement education and outreach programs for the private and public sector, as well as the general public, about the impacts of road salt on drinking water sources and the use of best management practices. It is recommended that the key messages be the efficient use of road salts and the use of alternatives to ensure this activity ceases to be and/or never becomes a significant drinking water threat.

Monitoring Text:

CB-CW-1.6: The City shall provide a report to the Source Protection Authority, by February 1st of each year, summarizing the actions taken to implement the Source Protection Plan policies. Where the City is required to implement education and outreach programs as the primary means of managing the risk associated with significant drinking water threats, the report must indicate, at minimum, the properties where these programs were implemented and additional details on how the significant drinking water threat was managed and/or ceased to be significant.
