In highly vulnerable aquifers where the release of contaminants could result in the contamination of any type of drinking water supply, municipalities are strongly encouraged to protect all types of drinking water systems, beyond the large municipal residential systems addressed in Source Protection Plan.
To protect these other types of systems, municipalities are strongly encouraged to:
a) perform an inventory of the various types of drinking water systems within the municipal boundaries and prioritize protection based on current or historical contamination, age of system, demographic served (i.e., vulnerable populations), and density/age of settlement;
b) assess the vulnerability of these systems using appropriate guidance documentation (e.g., Ministry-developed Best Practices Guidance developed in 2021); and
c) manage local activities that could pose a risk to the drinking water source, municipalities by enacting best management measures that meet the objective of Section 2.2 in the Provincial Policy Statement under the Planning Act.
Applicable Areas
All Highly Vulnerable Aquifers where the release of contaminants could result in contamination of the source water for any drinking water system.
Effective Date
When the Plan, or any plan amendment, as applicable, takes effect.
