MTO continues to evaluate new innovative materials and procedures to more effectively utilize salt ensuring that only the right amount is place at the right time to maximize its effectiveness for road safety and minimize the impact to the environment. In the past year MTO has continued to test various pre-wet and pretreated salt products compared to traditional white salt to identify the equivalent application rates.

Policy Text:

The MTO, in collaboration with OGRA and AMO, shall be encouraged to undertake research, and share results, into cost effective alternatives to salt application, new mitigative technologies, and innovative practices that do not compromise public safety, in vulnerable areas where the application of salt would be a significant drinking water threat.

Monitoring Text:

MON-3: By February 1 of each year, OMAFRA / MTO shall report to the local source protection authority on the steps taken in the previous calendar year to implement these significant threat policies and recommendations, where appropriate.
